Carey graduates from Princeton just in time for World War II. After a stint as a bomber pilot in Europe, he attends Harvard Law School and graduates cum laude. Thus, when he joins the firm of Lavater, Powell, and Sistrom, one of the most important firms on the East Coast, he has justifiably high expectations of dealing with landmark cases and important public figures. When the news arrives on his desk that he is assigned to the Schneider Johnson case, it comes as a disagreeable disappointment. The case of an intestate fortune, with all of the makings of missing heirs coming out of the woodwork, dates to 1938, more than twelve years earlier.

A three-million-dollar estate left by a softdrink tycoon is at issue; Pennsylvania law decrees that any proven blood-relative could be entitled to a share in the estate. In 1939, even the Nazis in Germany were producing fake relatives (the search for bona fide relations had led to Germany in 1938). By 1950, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania wants to know whether any living heir can be found. George Carey inherits the case with eight thousand claimants—a legacy of complex and daunting dimensions.

Foster then recognizes the scale of political theater enacted before him: "This, I thought suddenly, was more than just the crooked trial of a politician by his more powerful opponents. Here, epitomized, was the eternal conflict between the dignity of mankind and the brutish stupidity of the swamp" (p. 55). From this point onward in the novel, Ambler reaches his stride as a prose stylist. The twisted convolutions (it is a complex plot) of political intrigue are matched by Ambler's intricate and subtle sentence structures.
