This swell will rise up when it encounters the shallow water and is much more likely to produce breaking waves than the wind, and they will also be much more visible. Strong tides and currents will often produce breaking seas and these will be more evident when the wind is blowing against the current. This type of wave is quite distinctive – there can be standing waves that break continuously in one place when there are strong currents. They may be marked on charts if they are a regular occurrence, and you are more likely to find them where the tidal flow is constricted (such as around headlands or in narrow channels).

Similarly, conspicuous objects (particularly if they are close to the heading you will be steering) are a good feature to identify, and isolated dangers and shoals should also be highlighted, perhaps by colouring or shading. If you are on a sailboat you might want to highlight the inshore depths that are the limit for the inshore course of the tack.
