Look for possible transit bearings that could give you a position line for checking your progress. Look for significant changes in soundings that could help to give you a fix when you keep your sounder on. You can discover so many clues from a close study of the chart that it’s worth spending some time doing this. Once you have extracted all the possible information along the route and have built up a mental picture of where you are proposing to go, it’s time to look at some of the more practical aspects.
This swell will rise up when it encounters the shallow water and is much more likely to produce breaking waves than the wind, and they will also be much more visible. Strong tides and currents will often produce breaking seas and these will be more evident when the wind is blowing against the current. This type of wave is quite distinctive – there can be standing waves that break continuously in one place when there are strong currents. They may be marked on charts if they are a regular occurrence, and you are more likely to find them where the tidal flow is constricted (such as around headlands or in narrow channels).
Buoys and other marks can be highlighted by circling them and if you are navigating at night it’s useful to write down the characteristics of the light so you don't need to look at the small print on the chart. Similarly, conspicuous objects (particularly if they are close to the heading you will be steering) are a good feature to identify, and isolated dangers and shoals should also be highlighted, perhaps by colouring or shading. If you are on a sailboat you might want to highlight the inshore depths that are the limit for the inshore course of the tack.
